IN Mag: Tell us about yourself!

KY: I’m KY. I’m a musical artist based in NYC. My first EP “Don’t Listen to Me” is on the way.

IN MAG: Describe your music for us.

KY: The first EP gives “moody ocean sex on the beach while smoking a blunt” vibes.

IN MAG: Where does your inspiration come from?

KY: Spending a lot of time alone as a kid. I think feeling isolated and “different”pushed me to be imaginative. I read a lot of books and spent a lot of time writing. It becomes easy to create a fantasy world in your own mind when you’re alone. I’m trying to channel that feeling into my adulthood. It’s therapeutic.

IN MAG: What has been the process of working on your EP?

KY: I spent a lot of time on my fire escape in Chinatown writing lyrics and listening to beats. I’m an intensely visual person, so every song I make immediately turns into a mental music video. After being stuck inside all winter, I visited my friend Alex in Jamaica to have the right landscape for shooting everything that’s been in my mind.

IN MAG: What are your biggest dreams? Where do you want this EP to take you?

KY: I want to collab with as many beautiful people as possible. I want to travel and have the freedom to do what makes me happy each day. So many of us spend our lives being unhappy, and I don’t want that for myself.

IN MAG: What does the IN Mag theme “In Between” mean to you?

KY: I find myself in the “between” stage in my artistry right now. 2020 was a year of self-reflection and I knew I needed a change in my life. I spent most of my time during quarantine diving into Ableton and writing lyrics. Now it’s time for me to transition from making beats in my bedroom to being acknowledged as a true artist.
