Hannah Black: Kylie, I had so much fun on this shoot. It was such a beautiful and exciting way to start the year. What aspects of your craft did you want to express? How does it feel looking back on this pre-quarantine project?

Kylie North: Hannah, I had so much fun with you, Hannah Siegfried, and Jane as well!! I just wanted to show off some regular salon services in a more creative way. Looking back on it, it makes me really excited about my craft.

HB: Hair styling is about many things, but two major aspects of the profession are community and connection. How did it feel working with models and talent who are all your clients? How did sitting in your chair translate to creating work together?

KN: Yes, I love doing hair because I enjoy interacting with people and serving them. It felt really good and fun. I was able to style their hair how I wanted to. Generally I give the client total control. It was really fun for all of us to chill out, chit chat and joke together.

HB: As we went into quarantine, how did you channel your creativity without being able to work? Were you able to come to any conclusions about your identity as a hairstylist and in your career vs. your personal goals?

KN: Creatively during quarantine I did a lot of baking, cooking , DIY projects around my apartment. I also played with some mannequins and took some online hair classes. I feel like I have the same goals and mission as I did before. I want to help people feel comfortable with their natural hair and help people express themselves.

HB: Getting our hair done makes us feel happy and beautiful. Did you take up or lean into any self care routines in the time when you were unable to provide that source of joy and contentment for others?

KN: I find solace and joy in nourishing my body with good foods, and being able to share those foods with my friends. I love to practice yoga and go on bike rides. I also started using a chemical exfoliant. And my skin feels radiant.
